April 24, 1971: Conference Notes
Things have really been busy since Elder H. arrived. We are getting along very well.
As soon as Elder W. left I began to iron out the difficulties in the district. Finally I decided to recommend a district division. I proposed it once more at the District Meeting. All seemed in agreement. Saturday, April 3 was a District Leader Seminar. I discussed it with the President then.
The past few weeks have been full of disappointment and heartbreak. Although we have taught the B.'s, follow-up on them had been very poor. Seminary and Sunday School attendance has hit an all time low.
Saturday, April 3rd, we had a good District Leader Seminar. As District leaders we decided to really work hard. We discussed many things. President W. introduced the open house manual and the ward council missionary program. He mentioned interviews.
Elder T. discussed interviews. He told us that they were to determine worthiness and to aid the baptismal candidate. Elder I. talked on dedication. We must be committed to a cause.. as missionaries we are to baptize. A mission is a total commitment; "The law of personal consecration", he called it. He called for rededication and repentance.
Elder W. said we must set a good example, always. People see us as we are, and a good image gets us into doors. Other points made were:
---We must have confidence in our calling, we are here on earth to glorify our Father in Heaven.
---We must have a conviction that we are called by a living prophet, its a divine calling.
---President Harold B. Lee- missionaries can do much more good than government $
PR is the key to success
--live rules--members know them--be a co-equal when leading
--praise others
--It's the Lord's area, not "yours," or "ours"
Companions--don't criticize; give DLC responsibility;
--magnify good points and develop leadership
--be unified and "perfectly joined"
--straighten out problems
--don't impress others at expense of companion
--our companion is our first responsibility
--be consistent as leaders
--oral evaluation
--"what are they going to do?" be positive
-- follow-up on challenges and goals
Image--self acceptance--we must like ourselves
--we can give more of our self as we think it's a good product
--we must want to be an elder
--be fired up and enthusiastic
--be relaxed
Good Teaching Habit
--make contact feel important
--stick to dialogue-don't lecture, "discuss"
--good diction, speak slowly
--eye contact
--testimony, teach by the Spirit
--give 100% chance to learn D&C 11:21 challenge
--when overcoming objections, make contact
--repeat question, and LISTEN
--use modern revelation
--don't leave one until the commitment is made D&C 42:14 D&C 88:22
--don't interrupt
--set a date, estimate
--are their questions coherent
--answer questions with questions
--review commitments
--be consistent
An overriding theme seemed to be praise others and to give before you request.
That evening A. B. was baptized. I performed the baptism and the confirmation. Ten elders stood in the circle. The Spirit was strong. We set up a first with Sister B. again.
That evening was also general priesthood.
President (Joseph Fielding ) Smith was the first to address us.
--"We are the Lord's agents." He has given us power to save and exalt ourselves and others. We must bless mankind, do what He would do as if He were here.
All blessings come from the Lord. We're expected to forsake the things of the world--"we are the saints of the most high." "As we obey we'll become a peculiar treasure, a kingdom of priests," (Ex 19 19:5-6). Peter called us "a chosen priesthood." "one of these days he's going to come!" "If we keep the commandments we'll receive blessings beyond comprehension."
Howard W. Hunter spoke on libraries:
--good visual aids create interest in a lesson
--we need one library in every meeting house D&C 42:2223, D&C 88:118-119 "every needful thing."
1) Priesthood holder to teach by word & by precept
2) Must prepare to be effective
3) seek the Spirit
4) we all have a stewardship of which the priesthood is part.
Bishop Victor L. Brown said LDS must maintain a good public image.
-- We must live our religion and be honest, virtuous, chaste, sober, living the commandments.
Brother Marvin J. Ashton spoke on leadership training:
--church is concerned about Aaronic youth
--Leadership training began four years ago with a modern school of the prophets, the process has extended from that.
--We must resist change which undermines our family.
Joseph of old remained free, even in captivity, because he kept faithful and lived the commandments. We today must remain unchained to pills, etc.
David accepted challenges--so must we. Walk quietly, but fearlessly.
Nathan Eldon Tanner
--Those who are not with us need our help. As 40% attend, 60% are not here.
He told the story of a home teacher activating a man who eventually became a bishop "we really need you--you, we want you, and you'll have to set a good example (ie. live the word of wisdom)
President Harold B. Lee admonished us to seek worthy things.
After conference I went home and taped the first two sessions from 12pm to 4 am. One of the speakers talked about controlling one's temper. That applies to me.

Bishop Victor L. Brown :Victor Lee Brown was the tenth Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1972 to 1985. He was an LDS Church general authority from 1961 until his death. Brown was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, the son of Gerald Stephen Brown and Maggie Calder Lee.
Nathan Eldon Tanner: In 1960, Tanner was called as an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a full-time LDS Church general authority. In the church, he preferred to be referred to as "N. Eldon Tanner." In 1962, the death of George Q. Morris created a vacancy in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which Tanner was called to fill in October 1962.
Marvin J. Ashton: Marvin Jeremy Ashton was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1971 until his death in 1994. Ashton was born to Marvin O. Ashton and Rachel Grace Jeremy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Wikipedia
